Ondřejov Observatory

Fričova 298, 251 65 Ondřejov

The Ondřejov Observatory has stood on the Žalov hill above the village of Ondřejov for more than a hundred years and is one of the most important scientific institutions in its field in Europe. It deals with the observation of the Sun and other stars, interplanetary matter and high-energy objects in space.

The observatory in Ondřejov is part of the Astronomical Institute of the CAS and is the oldest and largest observatory in the Czech Republic. It houses the largest telescope in the Czech Republic with a mirror lens diameter of 2 metres and a focal length of 64 metres. The rotating parts of this colossus have 80 tons. The observatory is arranged as a nature park and as a beautiful walking circuit it is accessible all year round. From May to September, on weekends and public holidays, it is possible to take a guided tour of the observatory, where you can also visit the historic domes and museum of the observatory, founded in 1898 by Josef Jan Frič, walk through the grounds and look at the two-metre Perk telescope from the visitor's gallery. Special events for the public, when admission is free and when you can even see more than usual, include the regular Open Days in May and the European Scientists' Night in September/October.

Refreshment recommendations:

There are two restaurants in Ondřejov - Pizzeria Pietro and the classic Czech pub Absolutní nepohoda. There are also two pastry shops in Ondřejov square. You can also go to nearby Mnichovice to the Mnichovice pub or to Mirošovice to the U Císaře restaurant, where President Václav Klaus used to have lunch.
